Why Book Editors Reject Fiction Proposals

I’m happy to announce the 2014-15 slate for WRW officers: President-Candy Lyons, Vice President-Julie Halperson, Treasurer-Misha Crews, Secretary-Robin L.L. Allen. Please take a moment to read the bios of these lovely ladies, then immediately go to http://www.rwa.org/p/po/in/req=showpoll&pid=145, log in to MyRWA, and vote. Thanks so much!

Beth Balberchak, Elections Chair

Candy Lyons

Candy Lyons has been a member of RWA since 2004 and WRW since 2005. She has served the chapter as category coordinator, judge coordinator, and then contest chair for the Marlene Awards. Candy served as chapter secretary, vice president, and most recently as president of WRW for one term. Writing as Mackenzie Lucas, she published her debut contemporary romance, Essence, with Soul Mate Publishing in January 2014, and last year she indie published a few of her contemporary paranormal romance titles. In January 2011, she graduated with her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University and she earned a BA in Literature from Dickinson College too many moons ago to count. Candy is the mother of three teenage boys and the wife to a supportive husband who champions her dreams. She writes sexy contemporary and paranormal romances with heart and passion. No matter if her characters are wielding magic or not, they’re sure to face trials by fire, fight unspeakable villainy, and confront their own fears and flaws all in the pursuit of true love. When she’s not pursuing her writing career, Candy can be found reading, because long before she was a writer, she was a romance reader.

Julie Halperson

Julie is proud to be included in the upcoming slate as Vice President of Washington Romance Writers for the next fiscal year. She has been a member of WRW and RWA for several years, and has served as the Secretary and Treasurer with WRW before. Her experience has been that she has always gotten more out of WRW than she put in, and she’s looking forward to our future.

She’s currently working on twist on Cinderella, in a space ship, and yes, it’s all about the shoes.

Misha Crews

Misha was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and has lived in the DC area all her life. Her first novel, Homesong, a multi-generational family story, was published in 2008, and was a finalist for the Bronte Prize for Romantic Fiction. It was followed by Still Waters, a 1950s romantic suspense, which was a Top-5 Finalist for Kindle Book Review’s Best Indie Romance of 2013. Her first contemporary romantic suspense, Her Secret Bodyguard, went to the top of Amazon’s Hot New Releases in 2011, and her most recent book, Her Badman Hero, was released in March 2014. Misha has been a WRW member since 2008, and has been the coordinator of the members and announce loops since 2010.

Robin L.L. Allen

Robin L.L. Allen has been an active chapter member with WRW for sixteen years, and has been in RWA for the same period. (Ack! How did that happen?) She writes as Rowan Worth. Robin has served as chair for both Programs and Hospitality, and has volunteered at the Retreat and on a team coordinating a Get-A-Clue program. Her Romantic Suspense manuscript Touch of Lies placed second in the Georgia Romance Writers Maggie contest (as Lacy’s Gift), and is currently with her agent at the Irene Goodman Literary Agency. She is working to finalize the second book in that series, as well as the first books in a Paranormal series. In her day job, she has been an editor for online classes and related publications for the U.S. military, association magazines, and scientific reports. She also has extensive experience as an administrative project coordinator and conference planner, producing minutes, agendas, and coordinated documentation for a variety of boards, committees, and special events.
